The Locus Coeruleus – Noradrenaline system: Looking into Alzheimer's therapeutics with rose coloured glasses
2022, Biomedicine and PharmacotherapyCitation Excerpt :The alterations in the microglial morphology as well as signalling is also seen in AD, which is an elevating factor in the disease progression [37]. The clinical as well as preclinical models have been shown to consist of microglial clusters surrounding the Aβ plaques, however, they do not phagocytose the plaques, like the cell cultures [38]. Earlier, the microglia were suggested to be phagocytic and useful to the plaque growth, on account of their display of amoeboid phenotype [39].
Salivary GFAP as a potential biomarker for diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease and its correlation with neuroinflammation and apoptosis
2021, Journal of NeuroimmunologyCitation Excerpt :However, correlation analysis did not verify this tendency for these donors. It was found that amyloid aggregates isolated from AD brain tissue can stimulate the activation of astrocytes in vitro (DeWitt et al., 1998) and that intraneuronal Αβ42 loading may be linked to early activation of astrocytes, before the appearance of amyloid plaques (Nagele et al., 2003, 2004). GFAP over-expression is crucial for the reactive phenotype of astroglia, and their processes interact with amyloid plaques (Kamphuis et al., 2015; Verberk et al., 2020).
