Antidepressant-related gene 34 (Adgr34), a RING finger protein, is regulated by the serotonergic system (Yamada et al., 2000). Adrg34 gene expression is induced in the rat hippocampus and the frontal cortex by disruption of the serotonergic system.

Since Kf-1 is associated with a pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease [1] or alleviation of depression [2–4], the expression of the Kf-1 protein was investigated in rat brain by immunohistochemistry. Using specific anti-Kf-1 antibody, Kf-1 appeared in the pyramidal cell layer of the hippocampal region and located in the neuron-specific nuclear protein (NeuN)-positive neurons (Fig. 1A, first row).

For the latter, drugs-mimicking aspects of psychiatric disorders such as PCP (Kaiser et al., 2004), cocaine (Yuferov et al., 2003; Hayase et al., 2004) and methamphetamine (Ogden et al., 2004) have been used, as well as therapeutic agents, such as antidepressants (Yamada et al., 2000, 2001; Landgrebe et al., 2002; Drigues et al., 2003; Palotas et al., 2004) or mood stabilizers (Ogden et al., 2004). Although several expression studies in animal models of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, depression or mania have been published, it is difficult to compare across studies due to the lack of similar protocols, with divergence in examined brain regions, treatment type and length and animals used.
