A “+” in the CS column indicates that the compound enhanced oxazolone induced CS reaction in mice (cf. Fig. 1), and a “+” in the atherosclerosis and antioxidant columns indicates that the compound has antiatherosclerotic effects in WHHL rabbits and/or antioxidant properties, respectively. A “−” indicates that the compound is without effect in the corresponding test. Effects of antioxidants on atherosclerosis and in vivo antioxidant properties are obtained from published literature; see text for details. There is a clear association between the effects on the CS reaction and the antiatherosclerotic effect. On the other hand, all antioxidants are not effective in preventing against atherosclerosis, neither do they all affect the CS reaction.
