Ex vivo effect of stavudine on [U-14C]palmitic acid β-oxidation in liver mitochondria from mice fasted for 48 h

Lean mice were treated with stavudine (100 mg/kg/day) for 6 weeks and fasted for the last 48 h. Liver mitochondria were isolated and incubated at 30°C for 10 min with [U-14C]palmitate, ATP, coenzyme A, and carnitine in the presence or absence of 2 mM KCN. The mitochondrial β-oxidation activity was assessed as the difference between the activity measured without KCN (total activity) and that with KCN (peroxisomal activity). Results are means ± S.E.M. for eight control and eight treated mice.

  • 2-150  Significant difference between control and treated mice (P < 0.05).
