  • Control cells were incubated in media alone. Hepatocytes in primary culture were otherwise treated for a period of 18 hr as indicated. Cytosolic iNOS enzyme activity was determined as described in “Materials and Methods.” Data are expressed as mean ± S.E.M. of four experiments. Statistical analysis was performed with the Student’s t test. NMA, N-monomethyl-l-arginine; NAC, N-acetylcysteine; APAP, acetaminophen; IL-1, interleukin-1; SOD, superoxide dismutase; CAT, catalase; DFO, desferrioxamine; BHT, butylated hydroxytoluene.

  • 5-a P < .01 vs. control.

  • 5-b P < .03 vs. control, IL-1, IL-1 + NMA, or IL-1 + 5 mM APAP.

  • 5-c P < .01 vs. control, IL-1 or IL-1 + NMA.

  • 5-d P < .01 vs. control, IL-1 + 2 mM APAP, or IL-1 + 5 mM APAP.
