Maximal analgesic potency is attained by introducing an alkyl group into the 3-position of these 1-, 4-, 4-substituted piperidines. Steric configuration determines the degree of analgesic potency. Four of these preparations are from four to eight times as potent as morphine. Qualitatively these compounds resemble morphine in pharmacological action. ER -
