They cause an increase in the amplitude of contraction followed by a period of diminished relaxation of the ventricle which terminates in systolic standstill. The angelicalactones improve the activity of the heart made hypodynamic by perfusion with calcium-poor salt solution. A quantitative comparison of the systolic action showed that the βγ-angelicalactone is considerably more potent than the three αβ-unsaturated lactones.
