The effect of cocaine, ergotamine and yohimbine on the activity of the phenol sulfur esterase has been investigated. 2. Cocaine inhibits the activity of this enzyme while ergotamine and yohimbine increase it. 3. This study suggests that the inactivation of the phenol sulfur esterase is one mechanism by which cocaine potentiates the action of epinephrine, and a potentiation of the activity of phenol sulfur esterase is one mechanism by which ergotamine or yohimbine depress the action of epinephrine.
