When both of these effects are considered simultaneously qualitative properties are acquired in addition. It is then possible to distinguish between the results produced by ergometrine and those of ergotoxine. Effective doses of ergometrine were found to be less toxic than those of ergotoxine. Using 16 rabbits for an assay, limits of error of about ± 20 per cent may be expected.
