The dissociation constants of the enzyme-substrate-complex for choline esterase have been determined for acetylcholine, acetylarsenocholine and butyrlcholine as substrates. 2. Choline, arsenocholine, acetyl-β-methylcholine, tetramethylammonium chloride, tropine, l-hyocyamine, d-hyocyamine, atropine, NaCl, KCl and NH4Cl are competitive inhibitors of choline esterase. The dissociation constants of the enzyme-inhibitor-complex have been determined for these compounds. 3. The inhibition of the esterase by carbamylcholine, physostigmine and prostigmine is discussed. 4. The question of the use of choline esterase as a model for the cell receptors is discussed in connection with theories on the mode of action of the choline-like compounds.
