In an equal number of experiments on the same subjects in which coffee (equivalent to 4 mgm. per kilogram of caffeine) was taken, a definite increase in oxygen consumption was recorded for both periods following the drinking of the beverage (one-half hour period, +8 per cent; one and one-half hour period, +9 per cent). In the same experiments, decaffeinated coffee produced negligible and inconstant changes on pulse rate and blood pressure whereas coffee, in the majority of instances produced a slight decrease in pulse rate and a slight rise in blood pressure.
