Daily arterial puncture on dogs over long periods (two months) is apparently without serious ill effect. Ephedrine produces a disturbance of nitrogen metabolism, probably by diminishing the assimilation of protein. A transient diuresis is always observed. Glycosuria usually persists after withdrawal. Tolerance to the pressor action of ephedrine is manifested. Ephedrine administration in doses that maintain a continuous hypertension may be continued for 2 weeks without other effects; the blood pressure and protein absorption return to normal within a few days of withdrawal.
