Morphine added to hashed brain tissue of the rat decreases the oxygen consumption due to added glucose. 2. Brain from non-tolerant animals killed one hour after a subcutaneous injection of morphine show an increased oxygen consumption over the normal for a period of four to five hours, due to the increased glucose. 3. Brain from morphine-tolerant rats exhibits the same metabolic rate as that from normal animals. 4. Subcutaneous injection of morphine into non-tolerant animals produces no change in the metabolic rate of kidney and testis.
