AB  - The actions of the oxytocic and pressor constituents of the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland upon the intestines of intact unanesthetized dogs are described. Both cause defecation. Röntgenograms show that different and characteristic actions upon the bowel occur. Intestinal loops in situ in anesthetized animals show inhibition throughout the gut with the oxytocic constituent. The pressor substance exerted no action upon the small intestine; the results, using the large intestine, were inconclusive. The results presented indicate that there is no reason to attribute the actions of pituitary extract upon the bowel to a constituent or constituents separate from the oxytocic and pressor substances. The fact that our own oxytocic and pressor preparations have exactly the same actions as pitocin and pitressin is presumptive evidence that the actions noted are due to oxytocic and pressor constituents.
