The toxicities of twelve members of the barbituric acid series have been determined intraperitoneally in rabbits and rats, and orally in rabbits. 2. By giving a constant proportion of the minimal lethal dose of each barbiturate, they were found to vary markedly in the duration of their action. 3. It was found that in rabbits the oral and intraperitoneal ratio of toxicity varies considerably in certain members of this barbiturate series. 4. Some evidence is presented which indicates that in case of certain of the barbiturates, a similar difference occurs in the ratio of intravenous to oral doses. 5. A difference in the manner of toxic action modifying the apparent depressant efficiency of some of the barbiturates has been observed. ER -
