TY - JOUR T1 - THE EFFECT OF HYPERTONIC SOLUTIONS OF SODIUM ARABINATE ON THE CEREBROSPINAL FLUID PRESSURE JF - Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics JO - J Pharmacol Exp Ther SP - 363 LP - 383 VL - 38 IS - 4 AU - JOSEPH HUGHES AU - LOUIS LAPLACE Y1 - 1930/04/01 UR - http://jpet.aspetjournals.org/content/38/4/363.abstract N2 - Hypertonic solutions cause a decrease in the cerebrospinal fluid pressure. Hypertonic glucose (50 per cent) causes a rapid, but transitory, drop in the pressure. The salts of arabinic acid cause a less rapid reduction in the cerebrospinal fluid pressure, but this reduction is maintained over a much longer period. Arabinate solutions cause a drop in the arterial pressure on the first injection. Subsequent injections have no such effect. With the recovery of the arterial pressure to its initial level, there is a drop in the cerebrospinal fluid pressure, which is the result of the osmotic action of the arabinate solution. ER -
