TY - JOUR T1 - THE EXCRETION OF DI-ETHYL BARBITURIC ACID DURING ITS CONTINUED ADMINISTRATION JF - Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics JO - J Pharmacol Exp Ther SP - 273 LP - 282 VL - 37 IS - 3 AU - NATHAN B. EDDY Y1 - 1929/11/01 UR - http://jpet.aspetjournals.org/content/37/3/273.abstract N2 - 1. When a fixed dose of di-ethyl barbituric acid (barbital) was administered to cats daily by stomach tube, its excretion in the urine lagged during the first week and increased during the second week. 2. The lag in the excretion was accompanied by the development of cumulative effect of the drug. This cumulative effect disappeared again as the excretion increased. 3. This sequence in the excretion of barbital and in its effect was repeated when the dose was stepped up. 4. Changes in rectal temperature during the daily administration of barbital were noted. The temperature rose from day to day at first and then declined again. After the drug had been given the rectal temperature was decreased in 60 per cent, increased in 30 per cent and unchanged in 10 per cent of the observations made. ER -
