It is thought probable that after medicinal doses santonin is almost wholly excreted as a colored compound which is possibly of the same nature as the colored substance transiently formed during the action of caustic alkalies on santonin. The colored substance occurs in the blood plasma and is not, at least is not wholly, formed in the kidneys. It may be found in the feces and is probably in part formed before absorption. A relationship between the excretion of this substance and the xanthopsia is shown. Whether the xanthopsia is due to the formation of this substance is left an open question.
