Substances tested were hypoglycin methylenecyclopropylalanine); γ-glutamyl hypoglyein: the pyruvate, acetylglycine analogs of hypoglycin; L-leucine, normal valerie acid, isovaleric acid and α-methylbutyric acid; 4-pentenoic acid. None of the compounds (from about 5 x 10-3 to 0.5 M) evoked meaningful signs of neurotoxicity when injected intracerebroventricularly. Only hypoglycin and γ-glutamyl hypoglycin given systemically yielded the "Jamaicain vomiting sickness" syndrome. The toxic potency of hypoglycin was not enhanced by use of the intraportal route of administration. Ablation of the medullary emetic chemoreceptor trigger zone prevented the early phase of vomiting but not the delayed reaction to hypoglycin.
