AB Pulmonary emphysema was induced experimentally by tracheal ligation and intratracheal injection of phytohemagglutinin. The functional consequences consisted of elevated functional residual capacity, increase in pulmonary resistance and impaired minute volume response to inhalation of low oxygen mixture. Daily injections of progesterone for 7 weeks prevented the appearance of experimental emphysema. © 1968 by The Williams & Wilkins Company
