The data show that: (1) taurine, in the presence of 10-6 M epinephrine or 1.25 x 10-6 M digoxin, promotes cellular accumulation of potassium in heart slices and abolishes or reverses the loss of cell potassium when heart slices are incubated in the presence of 10-4 M epinephrine or 1.25 x 10-4 M digoxin; (2) epinephnine, digoxin and procaine amide increase the conversion of taunine to isethionic acid by heart slices, quinidine has no effect, while acetylcholine depresses the conversion; (3) taurine, in the intact dog heart, prevents the efflux of potassium which accompanies lange doses of epinephrine.
