Reserpine (10 mg/kg) given intraperitoneally, reduced epinephrine, norepinephrine and adenosine triphosphate levels by about 90 to 95% within 24 hours. Recovery of amines and adenosine triphosphate was studied at intervals up to 21 days following reserpine. Recovery of norepinephrine was slightly faster than epinephrine, and almost complete replacement occurred in about 7 days. Epinephrine recovery was complete in 2 weeks. Recovery of adenosine triphosphate followed the same time course as the recovery of total catecholamines and 50% replacement of both took place in 4 days following reserpine injection. A monoamine oxidase inhibitor, pheniprazine, when injected at a dose of 2 mg/kg per day for 7 days, had no effect on medullary amines. The Williams & Wilkins Company
