It responds to indirect (nerve) and direct electrical stimulation. The indirect, but not the direct, response is potentiated by cocaine and pretreatment with l-norepinephrine, and blocked by reserpine and yohimbine. Hexamethonium and atropine are without effect on the ratio of indirect to direct responses. The efferent nerve supply is probably postganglionic sympathetic in nature.
