AB 1. A method of inducing reproducible cough responses in the unanesthetized dog is described. The method is based upon the stimulation of a localized area of the tracheal submucosa by means of embedded electrodes. 2. Employing this technique, codeine phosphate was found to possess greater antitussive activity than morphine sulfate. The administration of saline was ineffectual in inhibiting coughs.
