In the presence of either acetate, butyrate, or hexanoate as substrates, fluoroacetate, fluorobutyrate, and fluorohexanoate all inhibit the isolated rabbit intestinal strip; but the various substrates antagonize the fluoroacids to different degrees. 2. Fluoroacetate is best antagonized by acetate; fluorobutyrate and fluorohexanoate are best antagonized by hexanoate. 3. The effects of the fluoro fatty acids upon fatty acid metabolism and its possible significance in fluoroacid poisoning is discussed in the light of specific fatty acid enzyme systems.
