The method utilizes an infant respirator (Iron Lung) to maintain a constant respiratory pressure in curarized dogs. By slow infusion of the curare-like drug, voluntary respiration can be abolished without producing bronchoconstriction or a lowering of the blood pressure. A series of compounds has been tested, all of which are N-substituted arterenol derivatives. The most active compound JB-245 (N-2-(1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-propyl)arterenol) has approximately the same activity as Isuprel as a bronchodilator.
