Abstract
α-Monoacetylmorphine, diacetylmorphine and two hydrogenated acetyl derivatives have been compared as to their effectiveness in decreasing the rabbits' respiratory rate, minute volume and sensitivity to stimulation by carbon dioxide. Observations were also made of the effect of the drugs on rectal temperature and heart rate.
The least doses (milligram per kilogram) causing a decrease in respiratory activity are (a) α-monoacetylmorphine, 0.03, (b) monoacetyldihydromorphine, 0.2 to 0.25, (c) diacetylmorphine, 0.02 to 0.04, (d) diacetyldihydromorphine, 0.2 to 0.25.
