Abstract
The normal gastric emptying time was determined fluoroscopically in 10 healthy young adults. The test meal consisted essentially of 15 grams of Quaker Farina cooked to a volume of 200 cc.; 50 grams of barium sulfate were added. Several determinations were made and the average figure was used for the norm.
The effect of 1 gram of sulfapyridine was then determined. Again several determinations were made. The blood sulfapyridine level near the end of the period for gastric emptying averaged 1.8 mgm. per cent. Sulfapyridine in this dosage caused a noticeable delay in gastric emptying in each of the 10 subjects. There was considerable individual variation. The extremes ranged from 8.5 per cent to 59.5 per cent. The average delay in gastric emptying in the 10 subjects was 28.6 per cent. Statistically analyzed the results were significant.
