Abstract
1. The spasmolytic action of methyl atropine nitrate (Eumydrin) on the intestinal tract was investigated and compared with that of atropine.
2. The spasmolytic power of the two drugs was of comparable potency. Both drugs antagonized neurogenic spasm induced by eserine salicylate.
3. Using rabbits anaesthetized with ether 0.5 mgm. per kilogram intravenously of both drugs produced reduction in tone and loss of segmental movements in the intestine.
4. The L.D. 50 (by intraperitoneal injection of white mice) of Eumydrin was 0.11 gram per kilogram, and of atropine 0.32 gram per kilogram.
5. Eumydrin has a spasmolytic power equal to that of atropine sulphate but its toxicity is approximately three times as great.
