Abstract
1. Small amounts of eserine (0.05 mgm. per kilogram) result in inhibition of choline-esterase without manifestation of physiological effects.
2. Parasympathetic excitability is enhanced by small amounts of eserine (0.01 to 0.05 mgm. per kilogram) which parallels the degree of inhibition.
3. Eserine does not elicit a parasympathetic response until the choline-esterase activity is maximally inhibited (0.05 mgm. per kilogram).
4. Pharmacological action is suggested to be of a double nature: firstly, inhibition of the enzyme system with enhancement of parasympathetic effects; secondly, a direct stimulating action subsequent to a maximally inhibited enzyme system.
