The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics successfully launched its online manuscript submission and tracking system on January 1 of this year. All new submissions to JPET since that date have been processed through the new system, which is called Bench>Press (for “bench to press”). Bench>Press can be accessed athttp://submit-jpet.aspetjournals.org/. Links to the site are available from the JPET homepage (http://jpet.aspetjournals.org) and from the online Instructions to Authors.
During the first 2 months of operation, more than 70% of new manuscript submissions were made by authors using Bench>Press. Manuscripts mailed to the editorial office were put into Bench>Press for authors by the editorial staff. As of July 1, 2002, all authors must submit their JPET manuscripts through Bench>Press. After that date, submissions mailed to the Journal will no longer be processed by the editorial office.
Bench>Press has been well received by the authors, editors, and reviewers of JPET. Manuscripts appear to be moving through the online system faster than with the old paper-based system. Still to come are publish-ahead-of-print capabilities for the system. Once completed, Bench>Press will enable accepted manuscripts to be published online at least 2 months ahead of print publication. Accepted articles will be posted on a weekly basis in manuscript form as PDF documents. The manuscript version will remain accessible once the final copy-edited and typeset article is put online.
The use of Bench>Press by all JPET authors will improve the efficiency of the Journal's peer-review process and should result in shorter times to publication, benefiting authors and the scientific community.
