The following is a statement from the authors of an article in vol. 291 of the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics [Criswell HE, McCown TJ, Ming Z, Mueller RA and Breese GR (1999) Interactive role for neurosteroids in ethanol enhancement of γ-aminobutyric acid-gated currents from dissociated substantia nigra reticulata neurons. J Pharmacol Exp Ther291:1054–1059].
The authors have not been able to duplicate the action of alphaxalone that is stated in the above-referenced article to allow ethanol enhancement of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) responses from dissociated substantia nigra reticulata neurons. The ability of alphaxalone to enhance GABA response has been duplicated, as has the observation that ethanol at concentrations of 100 mM or below rarely enhanced GABA response from this cell type. The authors regret any inconvenience the results from this article may have caused.
