Abstract
A sensitive, specific and rapid method for the detection of amphetamine in biologic fluids of horses is described. Amphetamine is extracted from alkaline biologic fluid into a mixture of hexane and iso-octane. The trichioroacetamide of amphetamine is made with trichloroacetyl chloride in the organic phase. The derivative is chromatographed on JXR (methyl silicone) and detected by electron capture. Amphetamine was readily detected in the plasma of horses given 300 mg of amphetamine sulfate s.c. The drug was detectable for seven hours postadministration.
