Abstract
The bronchospasm accompanying anaphylaxis in the rabbit can be reduced by dexamethasone or hydrocortisone. There are two important mechanisms underlying this effect. The first is a depletion of histamine content in the lung after 1 week of daily administration of either corticosteroid. The second is a relaxation of the bronchial smooth muscle detected by a fall in pulmonary resistance immediately following an acute i.v. injection. These results can serve as the basis for developing new steroids with selective pulmonary actions.
