Abstract
The active uptake of potassium and elimination of sodium by human erythrocytes incubated at 37°C after 6 days of cold storage were diminished by clinically used concentrations of procaine, dibucaine, cocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine. These local anesthetics caused, especially in the higher concentrations, hemolysis and increased the passive loss of potassium from the cell and leak of sodium into the cell.
