Abstract
A double-blind factorial study has been carried out to determine the respiratory effects of morphine and caffeine in terms of the alveolar ventilation-end expiratory PCO2 response curve. Caffeine at the 500-mg dose level produced significant respiratory stimulation. When given in combination with 5 or 10 mg of morphine it produced significant reduction in the respiratory depression due to the narcotic. It appears that this is a surmountable, possibly a competitive, type antagonism and there is nothing to suggest that it is more than an additive effect between these two drugs.
