Abstract
In vitro experiments with frog sciatic nerve have shown that morphine, codeine, levorphanol, dihydromorphinone, methadone, meperidine, acetylsalicylic acid and strychnine decrease the fidelity with which high frequency evoked potentials can be conducted.
By direct measurement these same agents were found to augment the positive afterpotential (PAP).
Neither procaine nor sodium pentobarbital was found to have similar actions on high frequency evoked potentials and on PAP.
On the basis of direct observation of the PAP, strychnine can be distinguished from the other compounds by the wave form of the PAP.
Levallorphan in proper concentrations is able to antagonize the actions of morphine, but does not antagonize strychnine.
