The graphical solutions of mass action equations by Lineweaver and Burk for monomolecular, competitive, and noncompetitive reactions have been utilized to study pharmacological reactions on blood pressure. Competitive inhibition is shown for epinephrine-SY 28, epinephrine-yohimbine, acetylcholine-atropine, and histamine-diphenhydramine. Noncompetitive inhibition is indicated with a large quantity of SY 28. Ergotamine antagonizes the vasodepressor response to histamine uncompetitively.
The usefulness and limitations in the quantitation and elucidation of pharmacological reactions by the mass action law are pointed out.
