A study was made of the effects of k-strophanthoside on the contractions of the gastrocnemius-soleus-plantaris muscles made ischemic by intermittent occlusion of the aorta in cats anesthetized with Dial.
The intravenous injection of 0.1 to 0.2 mgm. per kgm. of k-strophanthoside was followed by changes in the responses to direct and to indirect stimuli. The amplitude of the contractions became greater, the duration shorter, and relaxation more complete.
The probable relations of these effects to the actions of digitalis glycosides on the failing heart are discussed, as is also the possibility of using ischemic striated muscle as an indicator of non-toxic digitalis actions.
