THE TOXICITY AND PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION OF THE NITROGEN MUSTARDS AND CERTAIN RELATED COMPOUNDS

The toxicity and pharmacological action of the nitrogen mustards and certain related compounds have been studied in various species. From study of the related compounds it is apparent that the toxicity and ability to produce delayed deaths and leucopenia requires the presence of 2 beta-chloroethyl groups and the formation of a cyclical imonium ion. Among the hydrolytic derivatives of the nitrogen mustards pharmacological action of high doses which produce acute deaths does not contribute significantly to the systemic injury which produces delayed deaths at lower doses.
