A NEW METHOD FOR THE BIOLOGICAL ASSAY OF INTERMEDIN

A. A. ABRAMOWITZ 1

1 The Biological Laboratories, Harvard University, and the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts

A new method for the assay of intermedin, using the expansion of denervated caudal melanophores in Fundulus heteroclitus is described. A Funduulus unit is defined as that amount of hormone which produces a darkening of the denervated caudal area in 25 per cent of the animals at 30 minutes following an intraperitoneal injection. The proposed method is specific, quantitative, rapid, and reasonably accurate. In addition, the test is performed on normal animals and no major operations such as hypophysectomy are necessary.
