A CONTRIBUTION TO THE PHARMACOLOGY OF BERBERINE

THOMAS M. SEERY 1 and RAYMOND N. BIETER 1

1 From the Division of Plant Exploration and Introduction, Bureau of Plant Industry, United States Department of Agriculture, Washington, and the Department of Pharmacology, the University of Minnesota Medical School, Minneapolis

Parenteral administration of berberine has been shown to give rise to a statistically significant prolongation of the lives of rats infected with Trypanosoma equiperdum.

Berberine has been shown to potentiate procaine anesthesia in the frog and the dog but not in the rabbit and man. In man berberine is an anesthetic in itself, but occasional toxic aftereffects would preclude its clinical use.
