A number of N-substituted derivatives of barbital have been prepared. Two of them, iso-propyl- and iso-butyl-(footnote 1), appear to be new compounds.
By isolation of barbital from the urine of dogs, it has been shown that N-dealkylation occurs to a large extent with the methyl and ethyl derivatives. No more than traces of barbital are excreted in the urine after administration of n-propyl-, iso-propyl-, allyl-, n-butyl-, and phenyl-barbital.
The effects on mice of these compounds, as well as of iso-butyl- and of sec-butyl-barbital are described.
