THE EFFECT OF INTRAVENOUS INJECTIONS OF MAGNESIUM SULFATE ON THE VASCULAR SYSTEM

VICTOR G. HAURY 1

1 From the Department of Pharmacology, Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

1. Magnesium when injected intravenously into the normal anesthetized dog produces a fall in blood pressure and a dilation of the splanchnic organs.

2. Magnesium injected into the spinal dog likewise produces a fall in blood pressure and a splanchnic dilation.

3. A dilation of the blood vessels is obtained when magnesium is perfused through the vascular system of the frog.

4. Magnesium acts peripherally insofar as its effects on the vascular system are concerned.
