A series of 15 nitrogen containing derivatives of phenanthrene has been studied with respect to its action on the isolated frog heart. The characteristic effect is a disturbance of ventricular rate, without modification of auricular rate. This disturbance, which resembles block, is not modified by atropine. Whether or not recovery is possible seems to be correlated with the structure of the particular compound studied.
