1. The effect of administration of Mecholyl and of adrenalin on the normal and on the thyrotoxic heart has been studied.
2. The response of the normal and of the thyrotoxic heart to administration of Mecholyl and of adrenalin is an entirely physiological one, in which an attempt is made through the cardiac reflexes to adjust the disturbed autonomic balance in the cardiovascular system. The response of the thyrotoxic heart to these substances is greatly exaggerated as compared to that of the normal heart.
3. The response of the thyrotoxic heart to the administration of the autonomic hormones is considered to be due in part to augmentation of the effect of existing acetyl-cholin and sympathin in the thyrotoxic heart. It is also considered that evidence has been obtained of the existence in the thyrotoxic heart of increased sensitivity to each of these substances.
