1 From the Pharmacological Research Laboratory, Hynson, Westcott & Dunning, Inc., Baltimore, Maryland
1. The pharmacological properties of four alkyl derivatives of ethanol were studied and compared with those of tri-brom ethanol and ethyl alcohol itself.
2. In respect to narcotic effects the bromine derivative was found to be the most potent while the alkyl derivatives varied in potency in proportion to the number of ethyl groups they contain.
3. This order of potency, however, does not hold good for every physiological function studied.
4. Both tri-brom ethanol and tri-ethyl ethanol, when applied to the intact skin of mice and rats, were easily absorbed into the system and produced narcotic effects.
