The details of the assay Of thyrotropic hormone from the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland are presented. Using a relatively crude preparation of the hormone, three doses of 4 milligrams each were found to decrease only slightly the iodine content of the thyroid glands of twenty-one-day-old rats. Three doses of 1 milligram each caused a marked effect in 200-gram guinea pigs whereas three doses of only 0.025 milligram each were necessary to accelerate the rate of metamorphosis in the frog tadpole.
