ACTION OF DRUGS ON THE CHOLINE ESTERASE OF THE BRAIN

FREDERICK BERNHEIM 1 and MARY L. C. BERNHEIM 1

1 From the Departments of Physiology and Pharmacology, and Biochemistry, Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, North Carolina

1. The preparation and properties of the choline esterase of the brain are described.

2. In most animals the activity of choline esterase per milligram of dry weight is greater in the brain than in the serum.

3. Choline esterase is greatly inhibited by very small concentrations of morphine and apomorphine.

4. It is suggested that these two drugs and possibly other centrally acting drugs may cause the accumulation of acetylcholine in the brain by inhibiting the choline esterase.
