Our studies in which isolated turtle hearts were perfused with barbituric acid derivatives in Ringer's solution of controlled pH showed:
1. A decrease in amplitude in concentrations of 1:2000 m in the order: sodium hexyl-ethyl barbiturate (sodium ortal), sodium iso-amyl-ethyl barbiturate (sodium amytal), sodium pentobarbital (sodium nembutal), sodium N-methyl-cyclohexenyl-methyl malonyl urea (sodium evipal), sodium phenyl-ethyl barbiturate (sodium phenobarbital), sodium cyclohexenyl-ethyl malonyl urea (sodium phanodorn), and sodium diethyl barbiturate (sodium barbital).
2. Proper judgment of these findings must take into account the factors of safety in the dose required to produce the end sought therapeutically.
